Traditional Wedding or Modern Wedding? Finding the Right Balance

Planning a wedding can feel exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming at times. One of the biggest questions many couples ask is whether to have a traditional wedding or a modern wedding ceremony. The truth is, there is no right or wrong answer.

Some couples love traditional weddings. They may want to walk down the aisle, exchange rings, include hymns or readings, and follow family traditions. Other couples prefer a more modern and relaxed wedding ceremony with personal vows, modern music and unique ideas which reflect their personalities.

Most couples choose a mixture of both.

As a celebrant, I always remind couples that your wedding ceremony should feel personal and meaningful. You don’t have to include traditions which don’t feel right for you. At the same time, you shouldn’t feel worried about including traditional parts if they are important to you or your family.

A celebrant-led wedding gives you much more freedom and flexibility. Your ceremony can be designed around your relationship, your values and your story together. You can keep things simple, traditional, relaxed or completely unique.

Many couples now include special symbolic rituals within their ceremony. This may include handfasting, unity candles, sand ceremonies or remembering loved ones who can’t be there on the day. These small personal touches often help make the ceremony feel even more special.

I often find that the best weddings are the ones where couples stop worrying about what a wedding “should” look like. Instead, they focus on creating a ceremony which feels warm, genuine and comfortable for them.

At the end of the day, your wedding is about celebrating your relationship and your future together. Whether you choose a traditional wedding, a modern wedding or a mixture of both, the most important thing is that it feels right for you both.
