Sustainability
As a Minister and Celebrant, I am committed to working in a way that is mindful of the environment, while keeping my services accessible and cost-effective for the families and couples I support.
My approach is simple and practical. I aim to reduce unnecessary travel wherever possible, offering meetings by Zoom, FaceTime, or WhatsApp video call, while still being available to visit families in person when needed. Where appropriate, I may travel in the funeral car to help reduce additional journeys.
I work as close to paper-free as possible. All scripts and documents are produced electronically, and where printing is required, recycled paper is always used. I also avoid providing pens or giveaway items, as these are often not environmentally friendly.
Within my own working environment, my office is powered by solar panels and renewable energy wherever possible. Items used during services, such as flags, scarves, and solar-powered candles, are reused wherever appropriate to reduce waste.
I also encourage simple, thoughtful choices within ceremonies themselves, such as working with local suppliers, reducing excess, and choosing natural or reusable elements wherever possible.
Sustainable Ceremonies
Creating a meaningful ceremony doesn’t need to come at a cost to the environment. In fact, with a little thought, it can become part of the story you are telling, one that reflects care, respect, and responsibility, not just for each other, but for the world around us.
There are many gentle ways to make a ceremony more sustainable. This might be choosing a local venue, reducing unnecessary travel, or keeping things simple and personal rather than overproduced. Across Lincolnshire, Peterborough, and the surrounding areas, we are fortunate to have beautiful natural spaces, local suppliers, and a strong sense of community, all of which can help shape a ceremony that feels both grounded and environmentally thoughtful.
When it comes to flowers, there is also a beautiful opportunity to keep things natural and meaningful. Rather than spending a fortune on arrangements that are often set in oasis or wrapped in plastic, you might consider bringing something from your own garden, or choosing plants and bulbs that can later be planted and continue to grow. The same gentle thinking can apply to plastic flowers too. Sometimes, less really does say more, and what is simple often becomes the most personal.
Sustainability is not about taking anything away from the day. It is about being intentional. Often, the most environmentally conscious choices are also the most meaningful, creating a ceremony that feels natural, personal, and truly reflective of those at its heart.
A Thoughtful Approach
If this is something important to you, I will support you in building it into your ceremony in a way that feels right.
That might mean:
- Keeping travel to a minimum where possible
- Using digital service sheets or recycled materials
- Working with local, independent suppliers
- Creating simple, natural settings that don’t rely on excess
Small choices can make a real difference, and together we can find the right balance for you.
My Commitment
In my own work, I try to take a thoughtful and responsible approach wherever possible. This includes limiting unnecessary travel, using digital scripts, and reducing printing. Where I do print, I use recycled materials, and I aim to reuse items across ceremonies wherever appropriate.
Where possible, I also encourage simple, meaningful touches that last beyond the day itself, whether that’s planting something in memory, supporting a chosen charity, or making choices that reflect long-term care rather than short-term impact.
Creating Something Meaningful
At its heart, a ceremony is about people, connection, and meaning. When sustainability is part of that, it doesn’t feel like an extra, it simply becomes another way of honouring what matters.
If you would like to explore how we can create a beautiful and environmentally conscious ceremony together, I would be very happy to talk it through with you.
