Non-Denominational Minister

Non-Denominational Minister

Reverend Jon Matson-Higgins

‘What is a non-denominational minister?’

As a non-denominational minister, I hold no connection with the recognised denominations and mainline churches such as The Church of England, Baptist, Catholic, Presbyterian, Lutheran, or Methodist churches. Church denominations are larger organisations that hold a particular identity, set of beliefs, and traditions.

Jon Matson-Higgins - Non Denominational Minsiter

As a non-denominational minister, I am not restricted to any particular or specific religious denomination, buildings or the rules and regulations which go with these places.  I hold no connection with the recognised denominations and mainstream churches, which hold a particular identity, set of beliefs, and traditions.

I completed my two-year training as a non-denominational minister and was ordained on September 25th 2022, meaning that I have undergone the process of becoming an Ordained Minister.

You may ask, ‘What is the difference between a priest and a minister?’

While bishops, priests and deacons are ordinary ministers of holy communion, only someone who has been validly ordained as a priest is permitted to offer the Eucharist. An ordained minister is not permitted to offer the eucharist.

‘As a minister, are you legally allowed to marry us?’

No, not under the current UK law, but this may change in the future

‘Do you wear robes?’

I usually wear a suit for the service I am officiating at; however, this depends on what you would like for your service; I can if you wish and if you don’t, then I won’t. It is not about what you wear.

What is my faith?

My faith is very open. I have a strong belief and faith, and I am happy to call myself a Christian. However, some people believe that as a Christian, you must lead a perfect life. I am not perfect, and I don’t believe that any one individual is perfect and that we should not be judged for our lack of perfection. My mantra is to treat others how you wish to be treated, respectfully, and offer an understanding of one another.

‘If you take our service, do we have to have religion in it?’

No, not at all; a service is about celebrating the occasion, in a way, what is right for the individual or family.

‘Would you come and say prayers with us while our loved one is in transition?’

Yes, I would be honoured to do this. I am happy to come to the hospice, your home, the hospital and even when your loved one is in the chapel of rest.

I always say I have the best job in the world, but some people don’t understand.  To me, it is my vocation, and my life experiences have helped me get to this point and given me the understanding and empathy to help the lovely people I get to work with.
