What to Say at a Funeral When Words Feel Impossible

Finding something to say, even when it’s hard.

Standing up to speak at a funeral can feel like one of the hardest things you will ever do. You may want to say something meaningful, something that truly reflects the person you have lost, but when the moment comes, the words can feel out of reach.

This is something many people experience across Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Rutland and Northamptonshire. The pressure to “get it right” can feel overwhelming, especially when emotions are so close to the surface.

The truth is, there is no perfect thing to say. And there is no expectation that your words need to be polished or profound. What matters most is that they are genuine.

Sometimes, the simplest words carry the most meaning. A memory. A moment. A sentence that reflects how someone made you feel. These are often the things that stay with people long after the service has ended.

It is also okay to keep things short. You do not need to say everything. Just saying something that feels honest is more than enough.

If you are struggling to find the words, a funeral celebrant can gently support you. They can help shape your thoughts, offer guidance, or even read something on your behalf if that feels easier.

If you would like to learn more about me, my background, and the services I offer, please visit my About Jon Matson-Higgins page or my Funeral Celebrant page.

I have created some basic information to help guide what to do after someone passes away, and some resources to support bereavement. I understand that planning a ceremony can sometimes feel overwhelming, so if you have any questions or would simply like an informal chat, please feel free to contact me through my contact page.
