About Jon Matson-Higgins, Minister & Celebrant, Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire.

What to Expect at a Cremation Service

For many people, attending a cremation service can feel unfamiliar. Not knowing what to expect can add to the uncertainty at an already difficult time.

Across Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Rutland and Northamptonshire, cremation services are one of the most common types of funeral. While each service is unique, there is often a gentle structure that helps guide the experience.

A cremation service usually takes place in a chapel. As people arrive, music may be playing, creating a calm and reflective atmosphere. The service itself often includes a welcome, music, readings, and a tribute or eulogy that shares the story of the person’s life.

There may be moments of quiet reflection, and sometimes a symbolic moment such as the closing of curtains or a final piece of music.

The service is guided by a celebrant or minister, who ensures everything flows smoothly and that the tone feels appropriate for those attending.
