Choosing a Reading

Choosing a Reading

When honouring a loved one at a funeral, choosing the proper reading can be a meaningful way to express your feelings, especially when finding the words yourself is hard. Readings, poems, and even lyrics can create a personal moment and provide comfort during a tough time. And while religious readings are often chosen, non-religious ones can work just as well, even at a funeral with a faith-based ceremony. You can pull inspiration from many different places, so don’t be afraid to think outside the box when finding something that truly reflects your loved one’s life and personality.

One thing to consider is whether your loved one left any instructions about what they wanted. Some people specify funeral details in their will or a prepaid plan, while others might share their wishes verbally. Knowing what they would have wanted can relieve some of the stress of making this decision, knowing you’re honouring their choice.

If you’re looking for inspiration, consider your loved one’s Favourite books, movies, or music. These can offer so many beautiful and personal options for readings. Maybe they had a Favourite author, a song they loved, or a movie that had special meaning. Song lyrics, in particular, can be a touching choice. Just read them all the way through before the service to ensure they set the tone you want. And hey, don’t be afraid to recite a line or two from one of their favourite songs or even a reading that always resonated with them. Music brings people together, and those lyrics can be a heartfelt tribute to their life.

Of course, some people may prefer a well-known reading. There’s a reason certain poems come up time and time again at funerals: they have a timeless quality and are filled with universal truths about loss and love. Poems like “Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep” by Mary Elizabeth Frye or “She Is Gone” by David Harkins are popular for a reason, and they can be comforting when looking for words that connect everyone in the room.

If you’re feeling up to it, writing something personal can be one of the most powerful things you can do. Writing from the heart might feel overwhelming, but it can also be healing. Give yourself ample time to gather your thoughts, and maybe ask a close friend or family member to review it with you if you need reassurance. If you feel that you can’t write it yourself, but still want something original, online services will write poems or song lyrics for you.

There are a few things to keep in mind as you make your decision. For one, the length doesn’t have to be extended to be impactful. Sometimes, a short, meaningful passage can be just as powerful as a longer one. Two to three short paragraphs can really pack a punch. Also, make sure to check with the officiant beforehand to see if there are any guidelines or restrictions for the readings, primarily if the service is held in a religious setting.

It’s also a good idea to practice reading it out loud before the day of the service. This can help calm your nerves and make you feel more confident when the moment comes. Take your time, speak slowly, and don’t worry if emotions arise—it’s completely normal. Let yourself feel whatever you need to feel; showing your emotions can actually create a special, meaningful moment for everyone present. If reading it yourself feels too difficult on the day, you could always ask someone you trust to read it for you.

Whatever you choose, remember that the most important thing is that the reading feels true to your loved one and provides a sense of comfort during this difficult time.
