Choosing a Non-Religious Funeral Reading
Choosing a Non-Religious Funeral Reading
Readings and poems have a unique ability to bring comfort, healing, and a sense of meaning during a funeral. Whether it’s words that capture a person’s essence, or lines that echo the feelings in our hearts, a thoughtful reading can be a beautiful tribute.
Non-religious readings are an increasingly popular choice—not just in secular ceremonies, but also within faith-based funerals—offering families the flexibility to choose words that feel personal and fitting.
In this blog, I’d love to share some gentle guidance on how to choose a non-religious reading, and how to find something truly meaningful.
Start With Their Wishes
Did the person who passed leave any guidance for their funeral? Today, many people record their preferences—whether in a will, a prepaid funeral plan, or even through conversations with loved ones.
If they named a particular reading, or referenced a book or song they cherished, that’s a wonderful starting point. Honouring their choice can also ease some of the pressure you may feel when making decisions.
Look to Films, Books, and Music
Words that moved them in life can also bring comfort in farewell. A line from a favourite film, a quote from a beloved author, or lyrics from a meaningful song can all serve as powerful funeral readings.
If you’re choosing lyrics or something less traditional, read them fully beforehand to ensure the tone is appropriate and respectful.
Consider a Favourite Place
Some readings are deeply evocative because they speak of a location that held special meaning for the person—perhaps the countryside they grew up in, a holiday destination, or a natural space they loved.
You might find a poem about the sea, the hills, or a simple walk in nature that reflects their spirit beautifully.
Use a Well-Known Poem
Familiar poems often offer a sense of reassurance. These pieces have stood the test of time, and many people find comfort in their recognisable rhythm and universal themes. Some popular choices include:
- Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep by Mary Elizabeth Frye
- She Is Gone (He Is Gone) by David Harkins
- Let Me Go by Christina Rossetti
- Funeral Blues by W.H. Auden
- Death Is Nothing At All by Henry Scott Holland
These poems can feel timeless and deeply comforting.
Or, Write Something of Your Own
Sometimes, the truest words come from your own heart.
Writing a personal tribute may feel daunting, but it can be incredibly healing. Take your time, and don’t be afraid to ask a friend to help review or even deliver it on your behalf if it feels too emotional to read aloud yourself.
Things to Keep in Mind
Keep It Manageable
There’s no perfect length. Even a few well-chosen lines can express everything that needs to be said. Often, 2–3 short paragraphs are more than enough to create a moving moment.
Check With the Officiant
Every ceremony is different. If the funeral is taking place in a church or other faith-based setting, check with the person conducting the service to make sure your chosen reading fits within any specific guidelines.
Practice Reading It Aloud
Read your chosen piece out loud in advance. Mark in pauses, breaths, and natural breaks. Speak slowly—nerves tend to speed us up—and don’t be afraid to pause if emotions rise.
It’s Okay to Show Emotion
Letting your emotions show is not a sign of weakness. It’s a sign of love. Whether it’s a tear, a tremble in the voice, or a long pause, these moments are often the ones people remember most deeply.
In Closing
Choosing a reading is not about finding the perfect words—it’s about finding words that feel right to you. Whether you’re sharing a quote, a poem, or something you’ve written yourself, what matters most is that it’s spoken with love.
If you’re ever unsure or would like help crafting or choosing something special, I’d be honoured to support you.
